The Miracle
Part 1

Nimble and practiced fingers swept across keyboards as several prominent men of science readied themselves for what they hoped would be a major step toward healing the damage inflicted in the Great War. Leading these men was Victor Attwater, the 42 year old geneticist and chemistry genius who'd developed a way to save the seemingly doomed human race.

After years of military delays and all sorts of unexplainably bizarre situations causing stalls, Subject 369 was finally back on Earth. There was much work for the scientists to do and much data for them to gather. The primary check-up and physical with the subject had been promising, as were the blood tests, but that had been years ago. Considering the 99.999999 percent failure rate in the subjects there were a lot of hopes riding on 369. Actually, humanity's hopes rode on whether the serum was successful or not.

Though the riots and mob mentality had died down considerably over the past few years, the social tenseness and political pressure were enough to keep everyone working with the project tight-lipped about any failure and boisterous with their few successes. It was about time for the public to finally get some positive news again...

The security cameras sparked to life. Subject 369 was trailing behind the other three Spartans as they made the trek to reach the building on the base that housed Research Clean Room #3. The speakers the scientists were now all eagerly monitoring were mostly quiet, picking up only surrounding noise of the woods and the occasional grumblings of the others. They didn't seem to appreciate the long march through the rain, nor the idea of the lengthy decontamination period that awaited them. 369 was silent, as though walking toward an execution.

369 had already had to decontaminate once before, though the subject had been recovering from a rather traumatic experience at the time. The scientists had taken the opportunity back then to do a routine blood pull from the Spartan. By the time they'd received the astounding results 369 had already been redeployed… and then seemed to just disappear.

The complication this time was that their prize subject would have company decontaminating. Standard military procedure dictated that the troupe would be spending the next 72 hours together in the chamber. If Victor and the project leads had had their way they'd have skipped this foolishness all together, or at the very least they felt they should have been allowed to isolate 369 from the others. It wasn't as though any of the Spartans had any chance of becoming contaminated! Everything about the MJOLNIR Mark VI suits of armor was airtight. Nothing from Blood Gulch could have POSSIBLY corrupted their air intake systems. But the military had been inflexible in their rules.

Victor and the others watched in silence as the foursome finally reached the facility. In a matter of moments a dozen lower level scientists in biohazard suits swarmed around them. There was suddenly so much talking that was difficult to discern 369's reactions from all the other noise. But the group was quickly separated and led off in different directions. The group watched avidly as their subject was securely locked into a room and 369 was ordered to disrobe. It was the first time in 6 years that any of them had seen that particular model of armor. The paint was chipped in several places, surely proof of bullets without enough power behind them to damage the armor. There was also a moderate indentation on the breastplate. Though what could have caused such damage was a mystery.

Victor was torn from his inspection of the armor when the order to disrobe was repeated. 369 hadn't replied yet.

369 didn't say a word to any of the four underlings and instead sighed heavily before unclasping the first series of safety locks holding the MJOLNIR Mark VI together. It didn't take long before large pieces of armor were being handed off and the fruits of the scientist's labors were hesitantly unveiled. In less than five minutes 369 stood before Victor's underlings in nothing but the standard issue black skintight jumpsuit. The genius had to blink his eyes several times to make sure he was seeing things correctly. 'This is incredible!' he thought.
Chapter 2: The Miracle Part 1

The end of the war was just the beginning. Things have not turned out all sunshine and daisies for our favorite bunch of idiots in a box canyon. Because in real life; some things scar you, some things toughen you, some things hearten you.

Disclaimer: Rooster Teeth thought up characters. I only wish that I could own them... The plot is mine.

Note 1: This story is AU (just ignore events from episode 100) and is set directly after season 5. I’ve wanted to do this for quite some time now. I actually wrote out the start of another story with a plot similar to this one and posted on fanfiction.net, but later deleted it. So if this looks faintly familiar that’s probably where you’ve seen it.
Note 2: Donut always seems to take everything in stride. But I imagine that there’s got to be a breaking point, even for someone that unflappably cheery. The scientific community may have what it takes to tear down the front. They’ll make Donut The Miracle.
